"Validating HTML With CSE"

CIS/CAT-72A XHTML Handout
Written by Scott McLeod

Introduction

If you are using the CSE HTML Validator to edit your pages, you are probably already familiar with its validation capabilities. But you may not be aware of the many options that can be set to indicate what particular aspects of HTML (or XHTML) you want it to look for. This is because different Web pages are written for different purposes and may have more strict or loose guidelines for their coding.

In our class, we want to be writing HTML code that closely resembles the requirements for XHTML, especially within the "body" of our documents. Therefore, we want to tell the validator to be strict with us -- find all problems and report them to us so we can fix them.

The Recommended Settings

The recommended settings are shown below. These are the settings that will be used by your instructor when grading your work, so you should be checking your pages against the same validation standards. To find this dialog box within the CSE HTML Validator (version 6.52 lite), use the menu commands "Options" > "Validator Engine Options..." > "Options" and then activating the "Validator 2" tab. Next check and uncheck the miscellaneous options as needed to match the choices shown below, and Ok them. Then validate all pages using these settings -- they will stay intact until they are changed again.

If you are using a more recent version of the CSE HTML Validator Lite, such as version 9.0, your Validator Engine Options dialog box will probably more closely resemble the dialog box shown below. If so, use the recommended settings shown below as those will be the settings used for final project grading.
