Textbook: HTML and XHTML, 5th Edition, New Perspectives Comprehensive, by Patrick Carey, Course Technology, ISBN 1423925467.
Materials: You need 2 disks (such as USB Flash drive, CD, or hard disk) for your work and your back-up, one of which can be brought to class as needed. And you need 1 other disk (CD, floppy, USB Flash drive) to turn in work (such as the final project) if asked to. Making back-ups of all work is a requirement!
Computer Lab Hours (MLK-219 Lab): Mon-Thur 7:00am - 9:00pm, Fri 7:00am - 3:00pm, subject to change. You have 18 hours of free lab usage. Contact your instructor if you use up those hours and need more.
Course Description: An introduction to Web page creation using Extensible Hypertext Markup Language (XHTML). Use HTML and XHTML along with CSS based inline styles to design and create Web pages with formatted text, hyperlinks, lists, images, tables, frames, and forms.
Student Learning Outcomes:Upon successful completion of the course, students should be able to…
Prerequisites: No class is officially required, but it is highly recommended that you have existing competency in the use of a computer and familiarity with the Internet and browsing Web pages. CIS 95A and concurrent enrollment in CIS 96 or 97 is recommended. Do not expect to do well in this class without these recommended skills and background! The ability to manage files (download files, copy files, rename files, create folders, etc.) will be needed in this class.
Grading Criteria: Grades will be assigned according to the following point system.
|
|
Note: Student grade records are kept by the instructor for grading inquiries for 2 years.
To Use Your Own Computer: You must have Internet access, and you'll need two recent major browsers, such as Internet Explorer 6+, Firefox 1+, or Opera 5+. Downloads of these are available. You also must have a text editor, such as NotePad, and a recent version of Windows Media Player (or other player to play .wmv files). If you are missing any of this, you can enroll in CIS-96 to get 27 hours of computer lab access.
Attendance: You are encouraged to attend all class meetings for their full duration and to participate in class discussions. Although your attendance is not directly computed into your grade, history has proven that there is a strong correlation between your attendance and your success. Failure to attend classes for over a week without contacting the instructor can result in you being dropped from the course. If you wish to drop, you should officially submit a drop card to admissions or risk receiving an F.
Classroom Behavior: Any behavior that distracts students or the instructor impairs the learning environment and won’t be tolerated (no audible talking or eating, no music, no pagers or cell phones!) First you’ll be asked to stop, then to leave, and then, if necessary, you’ll be dropped from the class. Take this policy seriously!
Disabled Student Services: If you have a physical, psychiatric, emotional, medical, or learning disability that may impact your success in this class, contact Disabled Student Services. They will assess your issues confidentially and determine what accommodations, if any, are appropriate.
Assignments / Final Project: Each assignment involves work in HTML to create, test, and modify Web pages. Each assignment comes in multiple parts, with each part usually focused on a single Web page. Instructions for each assignment are made available on the class web site. Due dates are listed on each assignment and are also on the attached calendar. The final project assignment is a combination of some of the previous assignment Web pages and some new work put together into one Web site. You must do your own independent work on all assignments! The Student Handbook's "standards of student conduct" will be strictly enforced. Two or more people turning in “identically flawed” work or work that is “similar beyond a reasonable doubt” violates this policy and will result in 0 scores for ALL involved.
Exams: Exams will cover the topics on the assignments and in the textbook. The final exam covers all course material but emphasizes material covered after the midterm. See the attached schedule for test dates and times. If you miss an exam, you must contact the instructor by phone that same day to discuss your situation and/or to leave a return phone number -- failure to do so will result in loss of exam points. Missing the final exam without official written documentation results in an F grade. The student handbook's "standards of student conduct" regarding cheating is strictly enforced for exams, with violations resulting in 0 scores. Note: any work (including exams) not picked up during the semester is available from the instructor for only 1 semester after the completion of this course.
Late Assignments and Missed Exams: To be excused for a late assignment requires official written documentation of your illness or emergency. Late assignments lose points as indicated below. Turn in an assignment only if it is complete or if you are finished with it. Assignments are due at the start of class on the due date and otherwise will be considered late. Don’t wait until the next class meeting to turn in late work! Turn it in at the city campus computer lab (MLK-219 lab) when it is complete by asking the lab instructor on duty to “time stamp” it and leave it in the file cabinet for me to pick up. On the first page of the assignment, you must include your name, my name (McLeod), the class (CIS-72A), the assignment number, and an official lab "time stamp" to indicate when it was turned in. Assignments without time stamps are stamped when picked up. Assignments time stamped during class are considered late. Do not turn in assignments to mailboxes! Submit them in class or in the lab. The specific assignment point deductions will always be taken according to these guidelines below.
For further information on assignments, exams, and lateness policy, see the handout entitled "Assignment 0" which is required reading before you begin any assignment work or take any exam in this class. Note that the final project assignment has its own lateness policy stated within it.
